"Seveneves" by Neal Stephenson is an impressive hard science fiction novel that spans a 5,000-year history, from the destruction of nearly all life on Earth to the survival of a small group of humans in space and their eventual return to a re-terraformed Earth. The novel is filled with intricate details and scientific concepts, although the author's understanding of genetics raises some doubts. While the story is engaging, the genetic manipulations described seem too precise and technologically advanced to be plausible. Additionally, the depiction of epigenetics and its effects on phenotype is deemed unrealistic. Despite these shortcomings, "Seveneves" is a captivating read.
