Suç ve Ceza ile başlayıp Karamazov Kardeşler ile nihayetlenen başyapıtlar serisinin tam eşiğinde, deyim yerindeyse cehennemin kapısını aralar yazar bu romanla. Öte yandan, Dostoyevski’nin 1840’larda çekildiği edebiyat dünyasına 1860’larda dönüşün de şahikasıdır Yeraltından Notlar. Aradan geçen yirmi yılda sadece Dostoyevski’nin hayata bakışında değil, aydın Rus gençliğinin ideallerinde de kökten bir değişim yaşanmıştır. Geçmişin “güzel ve yüce olan her şeye” iman eden romantik idealistleri gitmiş, yerine akıl hocalığını Nasıl Yapmalı? (1863) ile Çernışevski’nin yaptığı, akla iman ederek özçıkarı her şeyin üstünde tutan yeni bir nesil tasarımı gelmiştir.Çernışevski’nin sembolü kristal saraydı. Dostoyevski de ne geçmiş ne bugün diyerek buna “yeraltı” ile karşılık verdi.“Hepiniz cehenneme gidin istiyorum! Huzur istiyorum.
