Ne var ki keşfinin gereklerini, insanlığın yararı için derhal ve yaygın bir biçimde hayata geçiremez. Mesleki hırs ve çekişmeler, saygın doktorların seçkinciliği ve dar görüşlülüğü Semmelweis’a engel olur. İnatçı, sabırsız, hatta saldırgan bir karaktere sahip Semmelweis tıp camiasının baskı ve yok saymalarını kaldıramaz ve bir akıl hastanesinde can verir.
