About This Item
Introducing the Dr. Martens 1460 Original 8-Eye Leather Boot for Men and Women in Black Smooth. These boots are not only a classic icon, but also a piece of footwear history. Dr.
Martens started its legendary journey in 1945 near Munich, Germany. When Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps, he needed a shoe that would make walking easier during the healing process.
That's when he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. The innovative sole construction featured air trapped within closed compartments, made with old rubber tires. Dr. Maertens shared his prototype with his friend, Dr.
Herbert Funck, an engineer and inventor. Together, they decided to develop and produce these shoes. Not only did the shoe provide a solution to Dr. Maertens' immediate problem, but it also gained popularity in Germany.
In 1959, they realized the need for a company to produce and distribute their shoes, which were then called Dr. Maertens, across the world. Initially, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air-cushioned sole, considering it a short-lived gimmick. However, the R.
Griggs Group in Wollaston, England, believed in the idea and created the first work boot with this revolutionary sole. On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was born, named 1460. To better market the brand in England, it was anglicized to Dr. Martens.
This range was branded AirWair, and the rest, as they say, is history. The Dr. Martens 1460 Original 8-Eye Leather Boot in Black Smooth pays homage to this iconic heritage.
